Rain Fury in Pune: Schools Shut, Mumbai on Red Alert

Pune, Maharashtra – The relentless and heavy rains have caused significant disruption in Pune, leading to the tragic deaths of at least four individuals in rain-related incidents. The severe weather has prompted the local government to declare a holiday for all schools and colleges in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad for today (July 26).
The incessant downpour has resulted in widespread flooding across several low-lying areas in Pune, prompting the deployment of Indian Army personnel to assist with evacuation efforts. As of now, approximately 400 people have been evacuated from affected regions, particularly from the Sinhagad Road area, which has experienced severe flooding.
The District Magistrate of Pune, Suhas Divsae, has confirmed that teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire brigade, and local disaster management cells are actively engaged in relief operations. The situation remains critical, with many residential societies inundated and traffic severely impacted due to waterlogging.

The Malpa Dongri area in Andheri reported the highest rainfall at 157 mm. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a red alert for the city and surrounding regions, including Thane, Raigad, and Palghar districts, urging residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has assured that if the situation worsens, airlift operations will be initiated to rescue those stranded by the flooding. He emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of affected citizens.

Airlines have also responded to the weather conditions by issuing advisories regarding flight delays and cancellations. Air India has offered full refunds or complimentary rescheduling for passengers affected by the heavy rains.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue across Maharashtra in the coming days. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions as the state grapples with the aftermath of this extreme weather event.

In summary, the relentless rains have led to tragic losses and widespread disruption in Pune and Mumbai, with authorities mobilizing resources to manage the crisis and ensure public safety.
